At the KangaNews Debt Capital Market Summit 2026, Steven Okun delivered a keynote highlighting how a new geopolitical era is set to drive higher global energy costs. He emphasized that regardless of how or when the war with Iran ends, governments will increasingly prioritise energy security and resilience—an approach that will come with significant financial implications. Okun underscored that businesses and investors must recognise and respond to this “gray rhino” risk.

In the closing segment of his talk, followed by an in-depth Q&A led by Laurence Davison, Okun also addressed U.S. domestic politics. He argued that expectations for the upcoming midterm elections to pressure Donald Trump into ending the war with Iran are misplaced, noting that Trump’s decisions are driven primarily by his personal political interests and core MAGA base rather than broader Republican considerations.

Okun expressed his appreciation to Samantha Swiss, and highlighted his continued collaboration with Davison and Helen Craig. He also acknowledged Noemie Viterale for her role in developing the presentation.
