Steven Okun, CEO of public affairs consulting firm APAC Advisors, acknowledged the importance of a meeting between the U.S. and Chinese leaders but expressed uncertainty about its occurrence at the end of the month.
"It is in the interest of both nations to find an equilibrium in their trade relationship. To achieve this, the two leaders must meet. Whether a summit takes place at the end of the month or later remains uncertain," Okun said.
Olson acknowledged that too much is at stake if the meeting fails to materialize, with global markets and business sentiment likely to suffer greatly. "I remain cautiously optimistic about the summit's prospects, but it is far from certain," he said.
He lamented that the U.S. and China have now seemed to be focused on extinguishing flares rather than addressing structural challenges and seeking new ways to coexist.
