APAC Advisors' 2026 Midterm Series
The most expensive mistake in politics, according to Greg Schultz, is talking to the loudest voters instead of the most numerous ones.
At our first session of APAC Advisors' Midterm Election Series, Schultz — who managed Biden's 2020 primary campaign after running the Obama-Biden re-election in 2012 in Ohio — walked us through a pattern he's watched repeat since 2020: Democratic strategy gets built around a small, vocal, online slice of the electorate, while the unglamorous work of reaching the party's actual base gets comparatively little investment.
His clearest example was voter registration: in Mississippi alone, he estimated 200,000 mostly Black voters who haven't been asked to register in years, enough, in his view, to have put the state in play. Texas has a similar gap, in the millions.
His bigger worry is what comes after November. A big win read as a mandate could tempt Democrats into revenge impeachment proceedings that won't succeed - instead of the issues that actually move voters: cost and corruption.
Used well, investigative power chips away at Trump's standing. Used for score-settling, it becomes the story Republicans tell in 2028.
